Black Widows Everywhere

I don't mean to frighten anyone, but just be on the lookout. We have black widows all over St. George.

This was reconfirmed for me last week when I went to gas up my car. I found a colony of hundreds of baby black widows. Some of them were even on the pump handle!

You may have seen a baby black widow yourself and not known it, so I'm going to post some pictures of them below. I won't make you look at them though, so you'll have to click on the links to see them.

Tiny spiderlets have almost no color when they are born.

Juviniles all have the hourglass shape on their abdomens, but it always starts out white.

Males have a distinctive pattern on their abdomen. They also have the hourglass shape, but I don't think it ever turns red.
